Type of work:
Plenary session at leading international conference in Central and South-Eastern Europe
Topic:
Plenary sessions exploring revitalizing leadership in era of conflict and the prospect of peace in Ukraine
Client:
Bled Strategic Forum (Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Centre for European Perspective)
The Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Centre for European Perspective hosted the 20th edition of the Bled Strategic Forum.
Nik Gowing was asked to chair two provocative sessions for the forum. Alongside the discussion on “Revitalizing Leadership in an Era of Conflict and Fragmentation” Nik chaired one of the Forum’s most closely followed plenary sessions. This addressed a question that defines our times: is there any realistic prospect for peace in Ukraine?

“Your extensive knowledge and reflections on issues of international politics added immense value to the discussions. Your contribution not only deepened our understanding of the challenges facing the world, but also presented new ideas that will guide future discussions. We greatly appreciate the time and effort you have devoted to sharing your insights with us.” ️
— Peter Grk | Secretary General Bled Strategic Forum
What we achieved
The discussion was candid, often bleak, but rooted in hard realities. Panelists included Baiba Braze, Rafael Mariano Grossi, Radmila Shekerinska, Sir William Browder, Zeki Levent Gümrükçü, Olexandr Mischenko, and Vojko Volk. They brought diverse perspectives, from diplomacy and defence, to energy and human rights.
The session revealed the deep challenges facing any peace process. Speakers stressed that Russia’s political, economic, and military systems remain entrenched in sustaining war, making negotiations extraordinarily difficult.

Nuclear safety risks, highlighted by Rafael Mariano Grossi in relation to Zaporizhzhia and Chernobyl, underscored how the conflict threatens not just Ukraine, but European and global security.
The conversation concluded on a sobering note: the road to peace will be long, fragile, and fraught with dangers. Yet, the session also reinforced the essential role of sustained transatlantic unity, strong sanctions, and diplomatic innovation in keeping open the possibility of a future settlement.
The Outcome
Nik Gowing’s moderation helped surface both the urgency and the radical honesty required for leaders to grapple with these issues.
As with so many of the discussions at the Bled Strategic Forum the message was clear: old assumptions will not help in managing today’s unprecedented risks.
